Fitness-driven deactivation in network evolution

چکیده
Individual nodes in evolving real-world networks typically experience growth and decay — that is, the popularity and influence of individuals peaks and then fades. In this paper, we study this phenomenon via an intrinsic nodal fitness function and an intuitive aging mechanism. Each node of the network is endowed with a fitness which represents its activity. All the nodes have two discrete stages: active and inactive. The evolution of the network combines the addition of new active nodes randomly connected to existing active ones and the deactivation of old active nodes with possibility inversely proportional to their fitnesses. We obtain a structured exponential network when the fitness distribution of the individuals is homogeneous and a structured scale-free network with heterogeneous fitness distributions. Furthermore, we recover two universal scaling laws of the clustering coefficient for both cases, C(k) ∼ k and C ∼ n, where k and n refer to the node degree and the number of active individuals, respectively. These results offer a new simple description of the growth and aging of networks where intrinsic features of individual nodes drive their popularity, and hence degree.

I investigate the competition between two quasispecies residing on two disparate neutral networks. Under the assumption that the two neutral networks have different topologies and fitness levels, it is the mutation rate that determines which quasispecies will eventually be driven to extinction. For small mutation rates, I find that the quasispecies residing on the neutral network with the lower...
متن کاملJoint estimation of preferential attachment and node fitness in growing complex networks
Complex network growth across diverse fields of science is hypothesized to be driven in the main by a combination of preferential attachment and node fitness processes. For measuring the respective influences of these processes, previous approaches make strong and untested assumptions on the functional forms of either the preferential attachment function or fitness function or both. We introduc...

A kinetic model of a fixed bed tubular reactor incorporating catalyst deactivation was developed for the ISOMAX unit of Arak refinery. The kinetic parameters for the hydrocracking reactions over the commercial catalyst were determined using initial activity plant data i.e. when the catalyst is fresh. Catalyst deactivation was then taken into account by means of deactivation function based on pl...
متن کاملEvolution of Cooperation and Developmental Constraints - a GA-driven approach
In this paper we present a model of evolution of cooperation driven by a Genetic Algorithm (GA) and a two-level fitness function representing cooperative and individualistic behaviours. The GA drives the evolution of artificial Genetic Regulatory Networks (GRNs) that controls colonies of artificial cells in a grid. This set-up is used to study the effect of computational complexity on the evolu...
